Whether you have a broadcast spreader or a drop spreader, every spreader is a little different. They are typically plastic devices that are not finely tuned equipment. An easy way to calibrate either type of spreader for proper applications is as follows:
- Set it to 1/3rd open
- Measure out enough product for a small section of your lawn, about 1,000 sq ft
- Apply the product and see how it does (adjust up or down from there)
You should only have to do this one time and you will have it dialed in pretty easily.
Now, if you are looking to calibrate your broadcast spreader a bit more specifically, check out the video below as Allyn explains how to do just that. You can watch the whole thing or jump to the 16:24 mark for that information.

If you are looking to throw down some fert with a drop spreader, such Scotts Classic Drop Spreader, we invite you to check out the video below as Allyn shows us how to calibrate a drop spreader. You will find that for this spreader, we recommend setting it at a 7 to apply any of our Yard Mastery fertilizers.
